Online Image Storage Empty Online Image Storage

Post by michnet76 Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:56 am

If you're like me and like to have lots of your photo's online for a multitude of uses such as posting on this forum and others, or simply sending someone a link to a pic by email then an online image storage is the way to go, I initially used my ISP's website space that they give you with an internet connection but found it messy to work with FTP, especially if I was away from home- and I soon used up the 50mb allocation! Then I started using facebooks album feature but they compress and shrink photo's too drastically and everyone in your friends list can see what you're up too as well.

Then I discovered imageshack for myself the other week... they don't seem to compress images overly much or reduce them in size, there appears to be no limit and you can hotlink directly to the image like this and not have it open up in a window with a heap of other stuff or adverts:

https://2img.net/r/ihimizer/img580/1391/dsc0794p.jpg

You don't even need to sign up to upload pics, but I did so I can manage them and go back and find the link again down the track.

I read through their FAQ's and TOS and they seem pretty fair, no porn or copyrighted stuff etc, they will keep the image up to a year if there's no activity with it and there's a 50mb limit per image with unlimited images. If hotlinking directly to the image there is a bandwidth cap but for what I do I doubt that'll ever be an issue.

http://imageshack.us/

And no I'm not associated with them in anyway, except as a 'so far' satisfied user trying out to find a decent online image storage facility!

Oh and it must be said, for those new to putting images online; never put something up that you'll regret or don't want reproduced elsewhere... once it's online it's a free for all for anyone to download it and do what they will with it. You may feel it's copyrighted but that won't stop someone on the other side of the world from doing who knows what with it!!

If anyone else has another reliable online image storage solution they use please post it here for us all to check out too!!

Looks like photobucket are aiming for more of a community style website/service vs purely just online storage space like imageshack.

I signed up for the free account and noticed they shrink images to 'web-size', which would be quite fine for most people, in fact a good thing for those not familiar with downsizing their photo's straight off their cameras. They also appear to have a limit on the free account.

Video uploading could be an advantage too though. I'll use both ;-) Laughing Imageshack is handy for the full res. stuff I need to do.

Image hosting sites are great, but they have one major disadvantage when it comes to linking the photos to something like this forum: they aren't maintained permanently. As michnet76 said, they are taken down automatically after a year if they haven't been used and there's always the chance that the owner may "rationalise" his albums, which would disturb the link.

All of this means that the photo is not a permanent feature of the forum and if someone comes to the thread in a few years time, they will not be able to access associated photos. This isn't too important if its something of personal interest, but if the photo forms part of an explanation, then the value of the thread is lost altogether.

There is also the problem of losing an archive, which has already been started in the sense that details of all available products are being posted in the relevant sections.

The best way to overcome this problem is to store photos in-house. I don't know if this is possible with the piece of software we are using and it would also take up far more space. But if we are serious about making this forum a long term project, we should look into the possibility of hosting out own photos and this should be done sooner rather than later.

Very valid points... I've had that happen to me in the past. Link to photo's on my ISP server and then in 2 years time move them off cause I've ran out of space, then get PM's from old forums asking where the pics are!!

Few of the other forums I am involved with have a 'paid' sponsorship thing... you don't necessarily get anything extra extra, usually just a groovy 'sponsor' type badge under your name in the posts and a feel good investment into the forum.

The funds then go to pay for better server services and storage facilities.

One forum I frequent is run by a guy who runs his own server in his home and collects money to pay for his internet connection and extra hard drives etc... he runs a few forums now on topics that interest him, he's on disability and doesn't work so he's around day and night to moderate and run them... if he does get extra money through then that's all the better for him, bit of pocket money for his efforts.

An idea would be to still use an online image storage facility, but when making a post, most forums will allow you to upload an image from a link instead of from your HDD. I haven't checked to see if this forum setup will let us yet.

That is a very generous offer, but in order to overcome the problem, we would have to ensure that the forum link is to your storage and not to the original host.

You know a place where we could all access and store the files ?
And using the servimg.com included in this forum is not safe you think ?

I think for the file stability we're talking about here, it's going to have to be a paid facility of some description, freebie storage will always have those 'delete after a year' or 'file moved' type quirks, which is no good for people looking through archived posts.

It would also be good to have the upload feature embedded into the posting page so it's an easier process, instead of having to upload it manually elsewhere, find the URL and plonk it in the post with an IMG tag. I don't mind doing it being a more advanced user but others will find it confusing and at the end of the day discourage them from posting as much, well images anyway.

Another option; when people create a post with an image outsourced to a different server, a moderator could come along and copy the image from their server, save it on ours and re-link the image to our version.... but that'll be a lot of work when there get's to be more and more posting! There might also be ethical/copyright issues with that too... but that's not my area of expertise Shocked

Oh i though you had the servimg.com upload facility but i've just understood it must be a admin option. I received the validation of the account linked to this forum on this.
I have to check available space and time validity. If "permanent", i'll upload pictures for you or try to add the option. i'll check too if the option is expensive if available.

Once again, you are taking on the responsibility to see something through, MusashiChan. Thank you for all your hard work on this subject and for all the great work you have done throughout the forum. For my part, I would like to help more, but I am restoring my house at the moment and so I don't have much time to devote to this sort of thing and I'm doubly sorry here because I set this particular ball rolling.

Returning to topic, I don't understand a lot of what has been said and I suspect most people are like me. If you do manage to come up with a system that will enable us to host photos in-house, would you please post an idiots' guide. More work, I know, but I think it would pay dividends.

Yep! Opened a real can of worms! affraid LOL! No seriously... it is a very valid point you have raised though and if this forum is to have integrity into the future then any images posted should be stable.

MusashiChan, I'm happy to help investigate options as well. I've just been reading up on the Servimg.com service - their ToS are a bit vague on what they offer exactly!

Ok i have some option to allow attachment (stored in the serimg.com account of the forum i think).
Let me know if it's working for you, and tell me if option are good.
I set the max file size to 1mo and 1500x1500 ; i think it's sufficient for a picture, but if not just tell me.
I'll see if the storage space is big, can't find the size that we have for free...i think i can pay for extra space but it's soon for this Smile
The account seems to be permanent as long as the forum is alive.

And for the help, you do the best, it will take time to have new members and more contents, especially Blackstar content as the only one we will find is owners knowledge. So we'll have to compile it here...

thanks a lot !

Ok i've found the total storage size we have... 20Mo...
Here is the strating point to have more option from the free version...

"You can choose below, the additional storage you wish to get :

50 Mb : 50 Credits :
100 Mb : 100 Credits :
200 Mb : 200 Credits :
300 Mb : 300 Credits :
500 Mb : 500 Credits : "

And 1000 credits cost 9.9€. Not very expensive but i will wait to have some more member to spend money in this i think.

I'll check this later, little princess is crying !

See you !

To me it feels and sounds like an LP crossed with a superstrat!! It's similar construction to a LP but with a 25.5" scale. Blackwood tonecap, Rock Maple neck, not entirely sure what the body is, looks like Queensland Maple but could be Blackwood. I'm really digging it, not as dark sounding as an LP but certainly more punchy balls then a Superstrat - Perfect for my style as a mainly solo guitarist (drums and bass only). The stock Maton pickups are pretty good, they're their own top shelf units. I'm thinking I'll keep them for a while and maybe in a couple years play with something else maybe.

The Mother of Pearl inlays scream bling too!! Razz

FYI, when I refer to a Superstrat, think Ibanez RG style - those double cutaway, HSH, no pickguards and usually sport a F/rose double locking bridge. I've always called them superstrats!

Sounds nice, i didn't find an Agile on eBay at a good price. You have a dealer to re command ?
And as you're almost all in Australia, who are the best dealers for Cole Clark and Maton ?
Thanks

I brought my C/Clark FL1AC from here:

http://www.daviswheeler.com - they also sell over eBay and mention Europe in their postage: http://stores.shop.ebay.com.au/Davis-Wheeler-Music__W0QQ_armrsZ1

They're not the cheapest dealer but I found their service excellent and to me that's worth paying that bit extra.

I brought my Maton through Billy Hyde which is a national music store chain. I get great discounts with them being a returning customer. Not sure how you'd go with international courier with them though.

Here's a list of Maton's international distributors FWIW: http://www.maton.com.au/about-us/distributors.html

Don't understand, you have the option "host an image". Why we are not using it ?
It's linked to the forum so it'll stay no ?
